Admission to the Academic Master’s Program is open to applicants holding a higher education degree recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) (Bachelor’s or Licentiate degree, excluding short-term or sequential programs) who take part in and are approved through the selection process.
The Academic Master’s Program requires a minimum total of 42 (forty-two) credit units in courses and mandatory scheduled activities, comprising:
I – 12 (twelve) credit units corresponding to mandatory courses;
II – 08 (eight) credit units corresponding to elective or optional courses;
III – 10 (ten) credit units corresponding to Mandatory Scheduled Activities (APOs), to be completed prior to the submission of the Master’s Thesis;
IV – 12 (twelve) credit units corresponding to research, preparation of the thesis, the qualifying examination of the research project, and the public defense of the Master’s Thesis.
The specific requirements for the 10 (ten) credit units of the Mandatory Scheduled Activities (APOs) established for the Master’s Program consist of the completion of:
I. 01 (one) credit unit: Introduction to Bioethics course, with a workload of 12 class hours;
II. 01 (one) credit unit: Scientific Thinking and Production course, which must be completed before the beginning of classes in the first academic semester to be attended by the student;
III. 02 (two) credit units: mandatory attendance at 2 (two) qualifying examinations and 2 (two) Master’s or Doctoral thesis defenses, related to the area of concentration of the Graduate Program in Human Development Sciences, either at UPM or at an external institution, with proper documentation;
IV. The remaining 06 (six) credit units may be obtained through one or more of the following options:
a) 06 (six) credit units – Acceptance or publication of 1 (one) article in a journal with an Impact Factor or Qualis rating above the level established by the Program, or authorship/co-authorship/editorship of a book recognized by an editorial board or equivalent body;
b) 04 (four) credit units – Acceptance or publication of 1 (one) article with a Qualis rating below the level established by the Program, or a book chapter recognized by an editorial board or equivalent body;
c) 02 (two) credit units – 1 (one) abstract of a paper published in the proceedings of a national or international scientific event, with a maximum of 04 (four) credit units recognized for this activity;
d) 02 (two) credit units – Proof of regular participation in discussion forums, clinical meetings, or short courses totaling at least 12 hours, offered by the Graduate Program in Human Development Sciences or by an external institution, provided that they are approved by the Academic Advisor and endorsed by the Program Coordinator; a maximum of 02 (two) credit units may be recognized for this activity;
e) Other technical or scientific productions not covered by the items above may be awarded credit upon approval by the Academic Advisor and endorsement by the Program Coordination, according to the criteria established by the Program’s Academic Committee.
Sole Paragraph. All productions must be related to the area of concentration of the Graduate Program in Human Development Sciences.
Art. 12. The Master’s Thesis, which is mandatory for obtaining the Master’s degree, must demonstrate knowledge of the existing literature and the candidate’s research capacity within one of the areas of concentration of the Graduate Program.
All supporting documents must be sent to the email address ccbs.posdesenvolvimentohumano@mackenzie.br, together with the APO Submission Form, duly completed and signed by both the Academic Advisor and the student, at least 30 days prior to the thesis submission date.
The Doctoral Program, for applicants holding a Master’s degree from a program recognized by CAPES or validated by the Brazilian government, requires a minimum total of 62 (sixty-two) credit units, comprising:
I – 08 (eight) credit units corresponding to mandatory courses;
II – 08 (eight) credit units corresponding to elective or optional courses;
III – 18 (eighteen) credit units corresponding to the Mandatory Scheduled Activities (APOs);
IV – 28 (twenty-eight) credit units corresponding to research, preparation of the thesis, the qualifying examination of the research project, and the public defense of the Doctoral Thesis.
The specific requirements for the 18 (eighteen) credit units of the Mandatory Scheduled Activities (APOs) established for the Doctoral Program consist of the mandatory completion of:
I. 01 (one) credit unit: Introduction to Bioethics Course, with a workload of 12 class hours. For students who have completed a Bioethics course in another Graduate Program or who completed their Master’s degree in the Program, the credits may be validated;
II. 01 (one) credit unit: Scientific Thinking and Production Course, which must be completed before the beginning of classes in the first academic semester to be attended by the student. For students who completed their Master’s degree in the Program and have already taken the course, the credits may be validated;
III. From 10 (ten) to 16 (sixteen) credit units related to Intellectual Production, the following options are available:
a)Acceptance or publication of 1 (one) article in a journal with a higher Qualis classification or in a journal with an Impact Factor, or authorship/co-authorship/editorship of a book recognized by an editorial board, worth 06 (six) credit units, with no limit on the number of credits that may be recognized;
b)Acceptance or publication of 1 (one) article in a journal with a lower Qualis classification or a book chapter recognized by an editorial board, worth 04 (four) credit units, with up to 08 (eight) credit units recognized;
c)Software registration or patent, worth 04 (four) credit units, with up to 08 (eight) credit units recognized;
d) Other technical or scientific productions not covered by the items above may be awarded credit upon approval by the Academic Advisor and endorsement by the Program Coordination, according to the criteria established by the Program’s Academic Committee.
With regard to item III, the student may earn up to 16 (sixteen) credit units through more than one publication in articles, books, book chapters, software registrations, or patents.
IV. Up to 06 (six) credit units, in addition to those provided for in items I, II, and III above, may be obtained through other academic activities, according to the following options:
a) 02 (two) credit units: attendance at 2 (two) qualifying examinations and 2 (two) Master’s or Doctoral thesis defenses, either at UPM or at an external institution, with proper documentation; a maximum of 02 (two) credit units may be recognized;
b) 02 (two) credit units: 1 (one) abstract of a paper published in the proceedings of a national or international scientific event; a maximum of 02 (two) credit units may be recognized;
c) 02 (two) credit units: Proof of regular participation in discussion forums, clinical meetings, or short courses totaling at least 12 hours, offered by the Graduate Program in Human Development Sciences or by an external institution, provided that they are approved by the Academic Advisor and endorsed by the Program Coordinator; a maximum of 02 (two) credit units may be recognized;
d) 02 (two) credit units: Receipt of awards for best paper at national or international conferences.
